What is 925 Sterling Silver and how can I identify it?

Sterling silver is an alloy made mostly of silver and a small percentage of copper and zinc to strengthen it. It can last a lifetime and be passed on for many generations if properly cared for. Silver is soft and not as durable as sterling silver.

True sterling silver pieces carry a specific hallmark - the '925' mark. This number refers to the jewelry's 92.5% pure silver content, a defining feature of sterling silver. If your piece has this stamp, it's a good sign it's genuine. However, be cautious; sometimes counterfeit items may also bear this marking.

Here are some of the ways to identify authentic sterling silver jewelry:

    The Odor Test

Sterling silver is odorless, so go ahead and smell the piece in question. If you can smell sulfur or a distinct metallic fragrance, then it is not sterling silver. The item could be silver-plated, but a scent indicates that it is not made entirely of sterling silver.

    Check for the S925 Stamp

This stamp is usually located on the back of the jewelry, near the clasp or on the inside of a ring band. It may also be accompanied by other stamps, such as "925" or "Sterling." These stamps are a guarantee that the piece is made of genuine silver and not a cheap metal coated with silver.

    The Magnet Test

Silver exhibits weak magnetic effects, so if the magnet sticks strongly to the piece, it's not real silver. This is the same for gold and platinum jewelry.  You can also put a piece of ice on the metal. If the ice melts immediately, it's probably real silver.

    Additional Product FAQs

    Is sterling silver waterproof?
Showering with sterling silver jewelry won't necessarily harm the metal. However, silver is a natural metal and therefore reacts with certain things. The water can oxidize the silver, meaning it is likely to tarnish and will therefore start to darken.
Can sterling silver go in salt water?
You should remove your sterling jewelry when swimming in saltwater as the saltwater harms sterling silver. The salt will start to corrode the jewelry and cause it to lose its luster.
Why does silver turn black when I wear it?
Silver is a very reactive metal. It loses its original shine because it chemically reacts to your physical composition and environment. Sweat, sickness or a boozy weekend can all change your body chemistry causing your silver to turn black. A light polish with your cloth usually takes it away.
How to remove tarnish from sterling silver?
    White Vinegar & Baking Soda
Soak your tarnished jewelry in a ½ cup of white vinegar with 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Warning: this mixture fizzes. Keep your sterling silver in this solution for two to three hours, rinse and dry.
Does hot water clean sterling silver?
Mixing baking soda, boiling water, and vinegar in a aluminum-lined tray will help remove tarnish from silver. Soak your silver in boiling water for about 30 seconds before polishing it to remove any stains.
How to keep sterling silver shiny?
    Keep Away from Moisture

Your jewelry may be more vulnerable to tarnishing in water and humidity. Therefore, sterling silver jewelry should be kept in a cool, dry location like a container, jewelry box, or airtight bag. Also, before you put it in the package, all air must be drawn out so that no oxidation can occur.
Why does my sterling silver tarnish so quickly?
Factors that speed up tarnishing: Pollutants: Living in high-pollution areas or coastal regions can cause faster tarnishing. Skin's pH: Some individuals may cause silver to tarnish quickly due to their skin's natural oils and pH. Household Substances: Chemicals, cosmetics, and certain foods can trigger tarnishing.
Does nail polish remover clean sterling silver?
You should never use any household cleaners such as bleach, chlorine, or acetone nail polish remover. Pure bleach will turn your silver jewelry black fast!
